Frogatto Soundtrack

#1

Hi!

I’ll post various pieces of the soundtrack being reworked, edited, etc. I am also definitely interested in hearing crits you guys have of the soundtrack thus far… things you like? Dislike?

Revision:

Here is a reworking of the map theme. I feel this version is a bit less exploratory than the former and stays on task better … I realize the instrumentation and all that jazz sounds pretty cheeze-worthy, but work with me here!

Cheers

Hmm… To be negative… Imho too much drums and too fast (liked the cozyness of the current one) and the instruments somehow sound artifical (especially at the beginning).

I almost tend to think it should “get right to the point”, due to the nature of how this theme is used, very much unlike most other themes. Except in cases where the player kicks back and enjoys the ambience, the map is only seen for a few seconds. (Really, think of how you tended you use the map in Zelda:AlttP - you’d pop on, tap the keys to your destination, and be out of that map in 6 seconds.)

So I almost think we should lose the 0:00-0:13 intro, and hop right into that flute section immediately.

Other than that, I like it.

I am kind of interested to hear what you guys think of the overall quality of the sound for this and whether this type of style would work in-game… ?

Thanks

I like this one, but I’m not sure the specific whys. :frowning:

Yeah, I think it would quite nicely. The instruments/samples on this are really clear, and don’t have harsh edges to their sound.

Cool. I am just trying to imagine whether or not this style of music is befitting for video game music. lol

Did a little development tonight. revision1

I only listened to it once, and got pretty distracted… but I think it could fit somewhere.

*DDR likes ChipJazz1.ogg
* DDR doesn’t like the fadeout at the end.

This topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.

Going to post some work that may work for the game. May not. Not sure it would fit.

It sounds nice and warm and relaxed. I think the track would be great for a puzzle-based level (or something like that, without a lot of combat) in world-1.

#13

That’s a really good idea DDR!

#14

I’d basically say exactly what DDR did.

FrogattoSymph calls to mind a massive, old, abandoned dungeon. It’s the sort of dungeon which has chandeliers. And secrets. But you’re safe at the moment.

http://soundcloud.com/ryanreilly/frogattoguitarmapjazz (previously written to be a map theme)

http://soundcloud.com/ryanreilly/frogattoreggae (previously written to be a beach theme… )

Not sure if either of these are going to make into the game. They are too long winded and crazy i think. At least that’s the general consensus among ppl so far it seems…

FrogattoGuitarMapJazz: memory tells me we’ve got (an earlier version of) this in svn, not quite sure if we’ve got levels using it yet, but there’s room in the unmade forest levels.

FrogattoReggae: Would be pretty rad if I actually had some *#&@^ beach levels. To be fair, I’m close - I’ve got sand, now, and combining the sand tiles, the current brown rocks, and some as-yet-unmade palm trees, would make enough graphics, the issue is then 1] making levels, and 2] justifying those levels with some unique gameplay.

An idea that comes to mind is an alternate path to town; instead of taking the land route, you take the underwater route. And we add new underwater enemies and attacks.

Really? oh. I think the version you are describing has more development, but this latest version is mixed a little differently (given more reverb and delay mostly) but the piece is entirely optional. I don’t know that it would work well as a forest theme.

Wow. That sounds also AWESOME. Would that be reasonably doable?

Just a heads up here. I am without a computer. My G5 conked out so there won’t be audio updates until I get the computer situation sorted.

Thanks for your patience
